Reframing Our Understanding of Mental Health in
Gifted Populations with Support from Evaluations
December 7, 2023
Imagine the transformative impact of viewing a gifted individual's behavioral and emotional intensities through a positive lens, rather than a pathological one. Dabrowski's theory of overexcitabilities (OE) does precisely that. Instead of deeming OEs as burdens, Dabrowski's framework celebrates them as wellsprings of creativity and awareness, fostering self-actualization. Nevertheless, OEs can lead to misdiagnosis, as we often focus solely on intellect and overlook the unique characteristics of those on the tail end of the bell curve. In this session, participants explore the world of gifted individuals and their OEs, utilizing Heather's comprehensive assessment for differential diagnosis and discovering ways to celebrate these exceptional qualities.
